Solar Eclipse #1

On Monday, August 21, 2017, a solar eclipse will be visible (weather permitting) across all of North America. DeKalb County School District’s Science Instructors will engage the students in the investigation of the solar eclipse phenomena. These activities may include instructional lessons within all content areas, televised viewing of the eclipse, and actual viewing of the eclipse with the use of special purpose filters known as “eclipse glasses”. These class will be provided by the school district.

This permission form was sent home on Monday to inform you and to gain signed permission for your child/student to opt-in to the outside viewing of the 2017 Solar Eclipse. Should the permission slip not be returned, the student will remain inside the building to view via live streaming. The permission slip is due back to the school by Friday, August 18th.

We are in need of volunteers to assist with moving students outside to view the eclipse and monitoring groups of students for safety. We will also need volunteers to assist in the classrooms with our “Solar Snacks”. We are requesting that parents consult with the classroom teacher for needed items such as moon pies, sun chips, milky ways, starburst, etc.

If you and your family would like to join us for the viewing, we ask that you arrive at the school by 1:45pm. We are expected to be in the direct path of the eclipse at 2:36pm. The parking lot entrances will be closed until all students are back in the building safely.

Finally, the school day will be extended for one additional hour on next Monday. We will begin dismissal at 3:15pm. Please plan accordingly. The after-school program will end at its normal time.
